The mass consumption of animal products is one of the largest threats to the environment. The U.S. pet food industry consumes enough meat to rank as the 5th largest consumer globally—behind only the U.S., China, Russia, and Brazil. Meat-based pet food contributes to environmental degradation while exposing pets to harmful contaminants like pesticides, antibiotics, and hormones. Even so-called “human-grade” meat comes from animals raised in unhealthy, confined conditions, which negatively impact health.

Transitioning to plant-based alternatives—even partially—can significantly contribute to a more sustainable future. Just as humans are shifting toward plant-based diets for better health and sustainability, pets can benefit from the same.
