The textile industry faces a significant challenge: most functional coatings are made from fossil-based materials or plastics, rendering textiles non-recyclable and environmentally harmful. These coatings are not only unsustainable, but also prevent reuse, contributing to growing waste and pollution.

Brightplus is tackling this problem with BrightBio®, a next-generation bio-based coating that enables textiles to be both high-performing and fully recyclable. By eliminating toxic chemicals and using renewable resources, Brightplus is making it possible to recycle coated textiles for the first time—without giving up on performance or safety.

The Story So Far

Founded in Northern Finland, Brightplus is a green-tech innovator reshaping material science through sustainable, bio-based solutions. Their flagship technology, BrightBio®, is a fully recyclable textile coating made from renewable raw materials. With 50% bio-based content and zero toxic chemicals, it offers a safe, high-performance alternative to conventional coatings.

BrightBio® delivers exceptional durability, aesthetic flexibility, and compatibility with existing production systems—making it easy for manufacturers to adopt sustainable practices. For the first time, coated textiles can be designed for recyclability at scale, transforming an industry long dependent on linear systems. Brightplus envisions a world where functional materials protect both people and planet, leading the shift toward circular solutions in the textile sector.

Milja is the CEO and Co-Founder of Brightplus. She is also an Adjunct Professor with a strong background in material chemistry and a focus on sustainable innovations. At Brightplus, Milja leads a team that develops advanced coatings and hybrid chemistry solutions. Milja's expertise lies in catalysis, coating chemistry, and combining hybrid chemistry with biopolymers. Originally from Lapland, she is known for her lively personality and finds energy in nature, her family, and her dogs. Her passion for sustainability drives her work to create solutions that benefit both industries and the environment.

Jarkko is the Technology Director and Co-Founder of Brightplus, and the driving force behind the company’s material innovations. He holds a Doctorate in Materials Science and brings a strong track record of commercialising renewable and recyclable materials and coatings across industries such as paper, textiles, and glass manufacturing. Passionate about closing the circularity gap, Jarkko is committed to keeping materials in the loop by matching the right materials to the right applications.
